About IconVersions

In our view, we’re quite unlike any other vehicle conversion company

Our ethos is to provide a unique conversion on any Iconic vehicle, predominantly using modern underpinnings and technology. We try to maximise the use of Original Equipment Manufacturers (OEM) components, systems and even entire drivetrains because they have spent millions developing and testing them. What is unique is how we use them, combine them and where they end up.

How We Started

This all started with a passion and love for older cars. I have tried Classic cars in many guises (Porsche, Mercedes, Audi, BMW) yet they all leave me somewhat disappointed by their driving experience, reliability, cost of ownership and lack of modern features. I started to build bespoke vehicles with the driving experience and features that I wanted.

I have personally built many vehicles of a bespoke nature, ranging from a 440bhp Caterham 7 to a Porsche 935 replica and everything in-between. Approximately 100% of the time (!) I was totally disappointed with so called specialists that I used for various elements of these builds. So I started doing things myself.

What We Do

We have done dozens of Iconversions over the last few years (mainly for myself!) and I have learnt the hard way. One of the key things is to know when and where to make a bespoke component and when to apply an OEM component to a new application. Some of my builds were full of bespoke components which, as an Engineer is exciting, but incredibly expensive and time consuming to build. Post build, the ownership experience was frustrating with months of fine tuning at various specialists who designed the components. Maintenance is a nightmare and expensive because you have to go back to the same specialist who made you the one-off part, if you can find the correct drawing. And wait. I have learned the hard way how and when to apply bespoke engineered components for the best results depending on the desired use of the vehicle.

Imagine being able to take your bespoke built car to a dealer or specialist for a diagnostic fault code read. Or buy service items from the same dealer or local motor factor. Our vehicles are designed to be used so this is important.

Of course, this depends entirely on the type of build and the owners desires and intended use. Examples of current conversions in train include VW T5 Transporter LWB with Audi RS6/7 4.0 twin turbo engine, 4WD transmission and differential. This will be our shop van!! See Projects page for details. Datsun 240Z being built on BMW Z3 running gear, BMW 635CSi (E24) with modern turbo 335i running gear. 1966 (?) Citroen HY van on modern complete Fiat Ducato 3.5t chassis and running gear. Ford Escort Mk4 RWD ex rally car with modern V6 Ecoboost turbo engine with 500-600bhp. We can integrate OEM systems (ECU’s, ABS etc) or set up any aftermarket systems to your desire.

We have over 50 (yes, really) interesting vehicles in inventory with hundreds of inspirational ideas waiting for the right customer to realise that they want one!! Alfa Romeo GTV with Maserati Gran Turismo V8 engine and complete transaxle running gear built as a street-able “Resto-mod”? Awesome. Lotus Elite with Lexus V8? Mercedes W123 Coupe with C63 running gear? Awesome. Scimitar with Corvette supercharged V8 chassis and 7 speed manual? Totally awesome. Jaguar XJS with 5.0l Supercharged running gear from modern XFR? Imagine!! And that is before we get to Electric Vehicle (EV) conversions; I have a 1969 Porsche 911T body which I may well make fully electric. Or a Lotus Elan with Tesla motors?? I also have ideas (and some parts!) for Ferrari, Detomaso, Lotus Exige, Renault 5 mid-engine with modern chassis and engine. The possibilities are simply endless……….
